How to Lose Weight after Having a Baby

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

When a woman has baby it is a such a wonderful thing, and weight loss is the last thing on your mind. However, once this joyous feeling has worn off and you are happy that your child is healthy and developing well, you will generally start to consider how on earth you are going to lose weight after having your baby.

The main problem is the pressure on new mothers when they see how quickly celebrity mothers lose those pounds after they have had a child; they can’t wait to show it off in as many periodicals that will buy the story. The fact that they have access to their own physical trainers and dieticians to help achieve weight loss after pregnancy for example is not mentioned; of course the time dedicated to regaining their figure is also disproportionate to the average mother.

There are things to make weight loss after pregnancy easier but these are not always available to the average new mom for at least the first few months, if at all. A new mother will be thinking about her baby and her focus should be eating healthily to regain strength and recover from the birth. The sort of diet that a mother needs shouldn’t be more than two thousand calories a day incorporating a small amount of fiber; the food she eats should consist of:

  1. 50% as carbohydrates,
  2. Protein should be almost a third of daily intake
  3. A small amount of fat (10 percent)

These percentages leave a little for a few of life’s luxuries which we all need but should not indulge too much in if getting those pounds off is important. As busy as a new mother is, it is still advisable for her to make an effort to get some moderate exercise and work towards a gradual increase in stamina, muscle tone, and overall fitness. The idea is that you look forward to the physical activity and enjoy the feeling when it is complete so moderation is the key, otherwise it will feel like a chore and you will give up.

It is best to start things relatively easily but do not expect that your weight loss after pregnancy as quickly as someone else as it is down to your own genetic makeup and how many pounds you gained during the pregnancy. There are a number of physical and psychological changes that a new mother will experience after the birth of a child and can have an effect on how quickly those pounds are lost. The order of the day is that losing weight after pregnancy will be more consistent and healthy if it is achieved slowly but surely through a healthy diet and regular physical activity.

There is no need to rush as fat lost slowly, and muscle tone regained the same way, will be maintained more successfully. If this routine is maintained then there is no reason why the excess and unwanted weight you gained during the pregnancy should not be lost within a relatively short period of time. Getting your figure back is perfectly possible after pregnancy and most women will achieve this but some may find that those last few annoying pounds just won’t go until the breast feeding has ended.

Weight Loss using Hoodia Gordonii

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Whilst every new method of losing weight gets a great deal of publicity, it seems that the excitement surrounding the Hoodia plant may be completely justified; many people believe this could be the plant that makes a difference. Now, many natural dietary products claim to use Hoodia as the weight loss constituent; in a short space of time the use of this plant has grown immensely. Whilst there is no secret about this plant, most people know very little about where it comes from.

There are in fact thirteen species of this cactus but one particular variety is used as an appetite suppressant. It is called Hoodia Gordonii and is found in the deserts of South Africa. For many years a natural solution to suppressing the appetite has been sought and it looks like this cactus can achieve what medical science has so far failed to achieve.

The cactus was in fact studied for quite some time by scientists around the world before it was allowed to be used. One of the examples of its effectiveness was quite astounding as it consisted of a number of BBC workers who volunteered to eat just a single Hoodia leaf. Nobody on the team required food or drink, once they had consumed it, for the entire day.

The best part about using Hoodia weight loss products is there is little or no chance of any side effect and so far none have been found. On the other hand, regular weight loss products have been shown to cause irregular heartbeats and digestive conditions. The great advantage of this plant is that not only does it suppress appetite and food craving, but it also gives you the right amount of energy necessary to continue daily tasks without feeling tired.

Anyone using it should still eat healthily during the day and also maintain their fluid levels. Hoodia weight loss pills or extracts are just a way of reducing the amount of food you usually eat; however, just because a person doesn’t feel hungry, they still need to eat, otherwise their health will suffer. Ideally, this is how Hoodia should be used, especially in obese people, just to control how much they eat.

Owing to the rarity of this plant, producing weight loss pills or products with extracts from this cactus is expensive. In many areas where a product is expensive, unauthentic Hoodia weight loss pills and other supplements allegedly containing the plant are readily available on the internet. Be warned if you see them at very low prices, it is unlikely to be the genuine product. For something as good as Hoodia, it is worth paying extra as it is the best natural form of suppressing the appetite known to man and should not be confused with cheap imitations.

Losing Weight Without Using Drugs

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Maintaining a healthy weight isn’t a special secret, in fact natural weight loss is about eating properly and regular physical activity; although, not many people listen to this. This is not as simple as it seems though even though the concept is easy to comprehend; although, currently over 35 percent of Americans continue to get larger, and they aren’t the only ones around the world! However, once you are overweight you can’t wait to lose it again whether it is for a wedding, vacation or just for health reasons.

But the fact is it is a whole lot easier to prevent putting on pounds than to try losing them later on. Subconsciously we all know that if we do not maintain a healthy food program for ourselves, we will start to add extra pounds.

For some reason even when dieters who have become used to, and enjoy, a low calorie diet, they eventually drift back to old habits and start piling the pounds back on again. The simple fact is this; the longer you ignore natural weight loss programs and stay overweight, the more likely you are to have health problems.

The importance of maintaining the correct weight is more than just for looks especially as the number of health problems related to weight and obesity grows. The annoying part is that natural weight maintenance is not difficult to understand but overweight people choose to ignore this.

A reasonable approach to natural weight loss is to stick to a diet that is high in complex carbohydrates and fiber, moderate in protein, and low in fat. A meal containing this group would be something like a baked potato, vegetables and some meat, lean of course but it would not contain gravy or sour cream.

Dietitians also say that the body has a capacity to retain dietary fat more than calories for regular foods so weight gain is more likely. Manufacturers have realized that there is a huge market for low-fat or even fat-free products but the propensity and popularity of these foods are not lowering the average weight of the nation.

The weight a person puts on isn’t always as a result of high fat foods, although they obviously do not help, but a result of too many calories turning into body fat. Weight control methods ensure you avoid the fat-free products but suggest you eat healthy and nutritious snacks if you are hungry.

Health experts say it would be better to try eating every three to four hours, which may mean a nutritious low-fat snack between lunch and dinner. If you are really serious about getting rid of those unwanted pounds, you will have to consider natural weight loss as a long term proposition.

Are Weight Loss Drugs for Women Effective?

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

It would be easy to believe that the global weight problem was just consigned to the adult population but that would be a lie; this situation is not only affecting adults but an increasing number of young people who are also succumbing to this modern day condition. Some people go to extreme lengths to change this situation for example with surgery; the most productive method is by exercising more frequently and changing what you eat. Unfortunately others that can’t wait to get rid of their extra pounds decide to take the quickest way out through the use of weight loss drugs.

These drugs work in a variety of ways but mainly they try to fool the brain into thinking the stomach is full and increase the person’s metabolism. The problem arose when it was found that one of the side effects from this type of drug was the increased risk of heart valve disease and of course the drug was quickly withdrawn from use. Newer drugs were developed and started to be prescribed by physicians and dieticians, some of these drugs are currently waiting for the Federal Drug Administration go ahead.

The use of drugs that help weight reduction has become so commonplace that it is almost certain that you know of someone who has tried them. It is a tempting proposition, to lose weight while still maintaining the same diet; who would say no? The weight loss drug manufacturers have spent a huge sum on research but this cannot be compared to the amount spent by consumers.

Despite the advances in weight control pills there are still health problems, some of which people are sickness and diarrhea. You must check the packet carefully before you decide to use them because some of the other side effects can be even more harmful, like the possibility of a heart attack or even a stroke, with hallucinations, tremors, breathing problems and convulsions all recorded as side effects for users of these drugs.

Of course, many factors can affect the type and severity of problems like family history, weight, age and lifestyle; this is why it is so important to see the doctor before starting a course of pills; should you decide to stop taking the treatment, other side effects can occur as a result. The side effects experienced by users of weight loss pills can include noticeable mood swings, hyper-activity, stomach pains, insomnia, nightmares, severe irritability, extreme fatigue, depression, nausea, vomiting and trembling.

Whilst the effectiveness of these weight loss drugs is not in question, they are more effective if they are used alongside a controlled diet and exercise regime. This means eating a good diet containing food from all the food groups that includes vitamins and minerals; fiber can be found in oats, rice, potatoes, cereals, vegetables and fruits.

Exercise can be done in whatever form suits the individual best but it should incorporate fat-burning exercises that will burn up any excess calories. Of course a good exercise regime will combine exercises that increase the heart rate and exercises that use weights to tone the muscles. A regime of this kind would increase an individual’s metabolic rate.

How to Manage Cellulite

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

The usually unsightly condition known as
cellulite is suffered by woman around the world and is universally
hated; the thighs and buttocks might be the main areas that experience
this but it can actually be found anywhere. Although additional fat is
normal in women, this is not just a problem exclusive to overweight
women; the lumpy substance that looks more like cottage cheese beneath
the skin can affect slim, even sporting women as well.

Fat beneath the surface of the skin
pushes against connective tissue causing it to give that dimpled look
commonly known as cellulite. In reality, nobody knows the real reason
why some people accumulate these fats and not others, but there are
some factors that health experts are considering such as the structure
of the fat cells or toxins that enter the body.

One thing is certain though and that is
as a persons age increases, the amount of this fatty tissue increases
in the same way that wrinkles also form which is probably due to the
reduction of the two components that keep the skin looking young;
collagen and elastin. It is normally classified as a problem caused by
hormones and is why men rarely suffer with the condition as fat in
their bodies is consistent throughout.

Cellulite often goes unnoticed for the
majority of the time for most people and is only seen when a person has
their thigh muscles compressed in the case of squatting for example or
when the skin is pinched in the thigh area and the puckered skin
becomes apparent; when the fatty tissue can be felt but most women
suffer with this. There are several factors that contribute to the
build-up; genetics probably, gender, the amount of excess fats in your
body, age is a major factor and the thickness of the skin are all
instrumental to its presence and just how visible it is, even at a
distance.

Currently there isn’t one single
treatment that can rid a person of this condition because the cause has
remained elusive despite considerable research into the area. Massage
has been found to help hide the indications of cellulite even though it
cannot remove it; but is does reduce it’s visibility for a temporary
period and is available from some beauty clinics.

Other treatments involve liposuction (to
remove fats) and mesotherapy (injection of drugs into the affected
areas) which is expensive and out of reach of the majority of women.
Liposuction is rarely that effective with surface based fat like
cellulite and is more proficient at removing deeper fats from the body
which are not trapped in the cells but none of these treatments offer
anything but short term relief only.

For people who are prone to the problem,
there are no magic treatments for selective removal but there are now a
number of creams on the market which are designed to help hide the
effect it brings. The most successful regimes so far are to adopt
regular exercise, a good nutritious low-fat diet plan and reduce extra
weight where possible.

Water too is useful as it has the effect
of flushing out toxins that accumulate and are thought to be partly
responsible for the cellulite; in addition to this smokers are urged to
quit or reduce their smoking which is an effective way for toxins to
enter the body.

Who Eats Most, Men or Women?

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

In what qualifies for the ‘duh’ award, recent research has apparently answered the question ‘Who Eats Most, Men or Women?’

It also proved that women eat a healthier diet than men, and actually prefer to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. The study is reported by CBS here : Who Eats Most, Men or Women

The research was apparently a telephone study of over 14,000 men and women and covered ten states in the US. So thats proven then, yeah? Not in our opinion! It seems more likely that this proves that men and women, telephoned at random and asked specific questions about their diet, give very different answers.

The only thing this study proves is that men admit to eating more and not enjoying healthy options. We woman, constantly swamped with diet and ‘wellbeing’ advice are far more likely to suffer a ‘guilt response’ of sorts when asked questions about our diet, and, well… lets say ‘give the correct answer’ in preference to the actuality.

So, who eats most, men or women? In our opinion it probably is Men, but this study proves nothing and should be ignored.
