Eczema in Children and Babies

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Much as with eczema for adults, science has failed to discover the reason why eczema affects some children and not others, although, again, it is clear that the immune system is involved.

Whilst Eczema can be hereditary, it can also happen when a person comes into contact with something that causes the body to react by producing a rash. For babies, eczema can be an awful condition where the rash is followed by flaking skin that can easily become cracked, causing a great deal of distress. The situation is relatively serious with figures of anywhere from 10 to 20 percent of babies affected by this condition.

Parents need not worry too much as in most instances of this condition it clears up completely; generally before the child has reached their second birthday. There are some cases though that do not clear up, even becoming serious enough to continue when they become adults. While people of any age can get this condition, it is most common in babies and young children. Sufferers have generally had the condition since before their fifth birthday and almost a third of sufferers before they were a year old.

Atopic Eczema in Babies

Atopic eczema is the most common form of baby eczema and can be recognized by red, scaly looking skin on their arms, legs and scalp which make the baby want to scratch themselves. Usually hereditary, atopic eczema is often thought to be triggered by a baby’s skin drying out. Often the trigger mechanism is either the detergent or fabric conditioner used to wash the baby’s clothes and this can also be the trigger for the condition in adults as well. Some medical research into baby eczema has found a link to mothers who cease breastfeeding their baby’s early so continuing this practice for a longer period may help ease the condition.

Other medical conditions, such as respiratory infections, may also act as triggers. Food allergies, allergic rhinitis or mothers who also have an asthma condition are all reasons that could make it more likely that a child will suffer from this disorder. Food allergies are believed to be responsible for anything up to 3 cases in ten; however, if this is the situation, there is no longer any reason why the child should have it its diet once the problem food has been confirmed. Even though this is a simple process, it can take some time but some of the common food groups are listed below:

  1. Seafood and shellfish
  2. Products containing milk
  3. Bread and wheat based products
  4. Egg based meals
  5. Peanuts

Physicians are also aware that baby eczema can also be caused when the child is given antibiotics after their birth. The treatment with babies involves bathing in lukewarm water, and proper skin lubrication with hypoallergenic creams. To ensure they are comfortable they only dressed in natural cotton clothing once they have been bathed. A baby with this condition can easily cause infection to damaged skin if their nails are not kept short because they will undoubtedly scratch themselves constantly. Unfortunately, baby eczema sometimes needs further help and in these cases, the doctor might prescribe the use of antihistamines to relieve the itching; local steroid creams are also prescribed when needed but just long enough to heal skin lesions. It is not yet possible to completely cure this skin complaint but at least a number of treatments can help ease the situation.

How to Use Spray Tanning Booths Effectively

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Many people use spray tanning booths as a useful and effective technique to maintain a year round all over tan. We look at a few techniques and tips to use spray tanning booths effectively.

Why Use Spray Tanning Booths?

It has become a recognized fact that too much sun is dangerous for our skin and causes many problems which is why the new artificial methods have proved so popular. Sunbeds, although once popular, are now less so as they still have many of the disadvantages of exposure to the Sun itself.

Across America (and other countries) there has been in increase in artificial techniques with spray tanning booths high up on that list. The spray system appears to be more consistent than other artificial methods like crams or lotions where streak marks are not uncommon.

Just to provide an even more convenient service, manufacturers have introduced spray tanning equipment that can be used in the home.

Tips on Tanning Effectively

Whatever type of fake tan you intend to use as a regular method, there are a number of things that can help to make it last longer and improve the look. To ensure a good clean body surface to work with, you will need to remove any dead skin by exfoliation. Fake tan applications that have been done without this vital step are easy to spot as the recipient has light patches in the tan where the dead skin has fallen off.

Once that stage has been completed, the body needs to be moisturized all over. One of the biggest mistakes people make at this stage when applying a bronzer from a bottle or cream application is to forget to wear gloves, this leaves them with orange palms which is hard to disguise. Lighter coats should always be applied to the joints and feet as they will appear darker, which is a dead giveaway that fake tan has been applied. If you are using a spray tanning method then you will need an old towel to wipe any excess fluid away to stop streaking.

To avoid any smears, marks or cracking, you will need to relax and remain still, while the tanning agent dries. Remember that these agents aren’t prejudiced and will tan clothes just as well as they do your skin, so be careful when choosing what you wear afterwards. Another point to consider is the change of clothes you will need once the tan has been applied; take some dark clothes along that way you avoid any staining. Armed with this information it should be easier to have a fake tan that is safe and available all year round without anyone knowing what it is you are doing.

Is Botox Safe to Use?

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Botox is widely used by women (and some men) as an aid to beauty - but is botox safe for women to use in this way?. Lets look at the background to botox and some of the pros and cons.

For the last few years if you have wanted to eliminate the signs of aging like wrinkles, sagging skin and other lines then it is more than likely you would consider using botox; despite how often this treatment is used, few people understand the method it uses. To help with this, we need to step back a few decades to when this substance was first researched and used. The first research into Botulinum toxin was carried out over five decades ago; originally the purpose of this was to treat neurological disorders.

Botox Safety Approval

A few decades later after much research, the FDA granted permission for it to be used medically and the first patients to make use of the drug were those with eye conditions; patients suffering with uncontrollable blinking and crossed eyes were given this and sometimes those who suffered with wrinkles as well. Later in the first year of the millennium after many more years of research, it was granted permission to be used on patients with cervical dystonia; this disorder causes severe neck and shoulder contractions but they also permitted it to be used with other eye problems. In their research, doctors discovered that Botox softened the frown lines between the eyebrows; following this the FDA finally recognized the implications and agreed its commercial use in 2002.

The Cosmetic Effects Of Botox

Botox has a paralyzing affect when it is injected into areas of the forehead which control the muscles that cause frowning; when given sufficient injections given over a period of time, frown lines for example, will reduce in intensity. The lines will to the casual observer, disappear but the same process can now be used on laughter lines around the eyes and forehead lines as well. To allay any fears about injection toxin into our bodies these injections only contain a diluted and purified version of the poison; because of the purification process it can be used in cosmetic surgery.

Unfortunately, lines and creases form whenever we laugh (especially as we get older) or make any other facial gesture; they are caused by muscles contracting. When we are young and our skin is more elastic, these lines do not show but as we age the constant use of facial muscles leaves us with lines; many cosmetic manufacturers have tried to create creams to eliminate the creases but this is the only treatment to date that can actually rid them from us. Botox paralyzes the facial muscles which means everyday expressions we use in communication and take for granted cannot be made; people who have regular treatment often look as though they are dummies because they cannot smile properly or make other facial gestures that we tend to rely on.

People still have enough movement to look fairly normal but not enough to cause these wrinkles; so in fact by taking these injections they help you to look younger. Whilst popular this cosmetic treatment is still very expensive for what it is; this is why it has been coined as something only celebrities have performed because the least expensive injection can still cost upwards of 300 dollars to in excess of 1,000 dollars. The side-effects of regular botox use may take some time to appear as it is only a recent addition to the cosmetic surgeon’s armory but for now, its use does not seem to be diminishing.

Weight Loss through Lipoplasty

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Lipoplasty is the correct name for what most of us know as liposuction, a cosmetic treatment which removes fat from the body; usually from the thighs, stomach and bottom, and is frequently used when other methods fail. An unwanted and peculiar side-effect is the fat that’s removed can sometimes reoccur; annoyingly, this can happen in a completely different area to where it was taken.

Tumescent and Ultrasonic are the two most commonly used methods although there are other lesser known techniques. The most popular of these two methods, Tumescent, is performed routinely now in the USA as a treatment for unwanted fat.

With this technique, a smaller tube is used to remove the fat which helps limit the amount of bruising which normally occurs. Virtually every patient to date has found the tumescent liposuction technique to be less painful, provides better results with more rapid healing and recovery.

Ultrasonic liposuction also facilitates fat removal from areas that have already been treated unsuccessfully, owing to their location.

It is possible, even though rare, for internal injury to occur owing to the fact the surgeon cannot adequately see where the probe is once it’s inside the body when performing the traditional technique of removing fat. If you are considering this type of treatment then discuss it with your cosmetic surgeon who will be able to give advice on the most appropriate method for you.

The danger from side effects using liposuction although rare, still exist so if you are unsure about the process, consult your cosmetic surgeon. Anyone considering this treatment will need to have a medical examination first to confirm they are in good physical health for the procedure to take place. With any medical procedure there is the risk of infection so surgeons have to ensure all wounds are kept clean and prescribe a course of antibiotics to patients having this cosmetic treatment. Fortunately, fat removal techniques have improved a great deal in recent years.

Lipo Dissolve is a type of liposuction which basically involves a series of minuscule injections of chemicals which dissolve localized areas of fat deposits. Of course the greatest benefit to patients undergoing this process is the fact that no form of anesthetic is required and it does not interfere with other cosmetic skin treatments where surgery is not required.

A Guide to Using Beauty Care Products Effectively

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Beautiful skin is not that difficult to achieve and you do not need a film stars bank account to achieve it; the information supplied here can help you to use beauty products effectively to improve your skin care but it needs to be carried out regularly.

Unfortunately many women still feel that the only way they will achieve that beauty is by using invasive techniques like liposuction and plastic surgery for instance. Of course the greatest benefit of today’s beauty care products is they only cost a fraction of traditional cosmetic surgery but can really provide a much more natural look.

The problem has always been our image of beauty care products like cold cream and the anti-ageing formulations. Today’s products are able to do much more after the research that has been carried out and are an important addition to your personal care regime. The skin that covers our entire body has an important role to play in continuing our health and beauty so should not be overlooked when it comes to regular maintenance.

The first and most important step in any skin care regimen is to cleanse your face to remove any makeup, dust and bacteria that it has encountered throughout the day. Gently massage your cleanser into your skin in circular motions using your fingertips and then rinse off with warm water but only pat your skin with a soft towel to dry it.

Each person’s skin has its own pH balance and if you use a toner once you have cleansed your skin it will re-establish your natural PH balance. Make sure that you take time to add a little lotion and massage to your routine as moisturizers make your skin look and feel soft and supple and can minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Moisturizing also has the added bonus of locking in the moisture that can be lost without its use, so do not skimp on this beauty care product.

Each week, at least once, and as part of your skin care regime you should exfoliate the skin to remove dead cells which will help provide a deeper cleanse. You must not forget however, that when you carry out this exfoliation you make sure that you continue with a complete cleanse and tone afterwards.

Beauty care product eye creams can now be used to help the very delicate skin around this area by reducing and swelling and signs of aging like lines but improving the elasticity of the skin in this region. Along with these simple steps above ensure you drink plenty of water, exercise regularly and eat a nutrient rich diet, all of which will help keep your skin looking youthful, radiant and beautiful. We often forget how much we rely on but take our skin for granted but if it becomes damaged it can lead to all sorts of problems.

How to Manage Cellulite

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

The usually unsightly condition known as
cellulite is suffered by woman around the world and is universally
hated; the thighs and buttocks might be the main areas that experience
this but it can actually be found anywhere. Although additional fat is
normal in women, this is not just a problem exclusive to overweight
women; the lumpy substance that looks more like cottage cheese beneath
the skin can affect slim, even sporting women as well.

Fat beneath the surface of the skin
pushes against connective tissue causing it to give that dimpled look
commonly known as cellulite. In reality, nobody knows the real reason
why some people accumulate these fats and not others, but there are
some factors that health experts are considering such as the structure
of the fat cells or toxins that enter the body.

One thing is certain though and that is
as a persons age increases, the amount of this fatty tissue increases
in the same way that wrinkles also form which is probably due to the
reduction of the two components that keep the skin looking young;
collagen and elastin. It is normally classified as a problem caused by
hormones and is why men rarely suffer with the condition as fat in
their bodies is consistent throughout.

Cellulite often goes unnoticed for the
majority of the time for most people and is only seen when a person has
their thigh muscles compressed in the case of squatting for example or
when the skin is pinched in the thigh area and the puckered skin
becomes apparent; when the fatty tissue can be felt but most women
suffer with this. There are several factors that contribute to the
build-up; genetics probably, gender, the amount of excess fats in your
body, age is a major factor and the thickness of the skin are all
instrumental to its presence and just how visible it is, even at a
distance.

Currently there isn’t one single
treatment that can rid a person of this condition because the cause has
remained elusive despite considerable research into the area. Massage
has been found to help hide the indications of cellulite even though it
cannot remove it; but is does reduce it’s visibility for a temporary
period and is available from some beauty clinics.

Other treatments involve liposuction (to
remove fats) and mesotherapy (injection of drugs into the affected
areas) which is expensive and out of reach of the majority of women.
Liposuction is rarely that effective with surface based fat like
cellulite and is more proficient at removing deeper fats from the body
which are not trapped in the cells but none of these treatments offer
anything but short term relief only.

For people who are prone to the problem,
there are no magic treatments for selective removal but there are now a
number of creams on the market which are designed to help hide the
effect it brings. The most successful regimes so far are to adopt
regular exercise, a good nutritious low-fat diet plan and reduce extra
weight where possible.

Water too is useful as it has the effect
of flushing out toxins that accumulate and are thought to be partly
responsible for the cellulite; in addition to this smokers are urged to
quit or reduce their smoking which is an effective way for toxins to
enter the body.

How to Keep Your Skin Looking Young

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

It is not surprising that one of the
largest markets in the world of health and beauty is anti-ageing skin
care products; this is due primarily to the fact we are all living
longer and want to continue looking younger as we age. The skin care
industry uses beauty products that increase the synthesis of the
protein collagen, the main protein in skin which becomes less elastic
as we age; almost 25 percent of the protein in skin is actually
collagen. This area of anti-ageing treatments is connected to another
group of products that help people to look young; known as
antioxidants, they are the body’s method of slowing down the ageing
process.

Vitamin C is probably one of the better
known anti-oxidants in use today but the debate about the daily quota
required is ongoing. The main problem when using any skin care
treatments which use vitamin C is that oxidization can occur as soon as
they have contact with the air.

To get around this some skin care
treatments are based on derivatives of vitamin C, which are more stable
and less expensive. Although these products are good, they cannot
actually compare with vitamin C but fortunately vitamin E and
alpha-lipoic acid are also anti-oxidants so can be used to gain the
same effect.

Vitamin E has many functions including
inhibiting the formation of cancer cells. It is found in the blood it
is an antioxidant that is also used to increase the body’s defenses
against other diseases. Lipoic acid is found in every single human
cell; it’s function is to provide energy and reverse much of the damage
caused to the skin by ageing.

Phytochemicals aren’t produced by the
body but are extracted from a number of plants and used in many
anti-ageing skin care products to combat the signs of ageing. Another
benefit, like that of alpha-lipoic acid, is their ability to reduce the
prevalence of certain cancers like prostate, colon and breast cancer.

For some time now it has also been known
that the vitamins B5, B6 and B12 also have anti-ageing skin care
properties. Although the area of anti-ageing skin care products is
huge, more is being learnt about the whole ageing process and about
natural products that can reduce the effects it has on our bodies as
well as our skin.

Whilst a great deal has been learned
about this subject, it is only the tip of the iceberg and more long
term effective methods need to be discovered to reverse or slow down
the effects of time. Hopefully, these challenges will get resolved in
due course and better and cheaper anti-ageing skin care products will
be produced.

Fortunately there is a number of natural
anti-ageing regimes that can be carried out that do not rely on
science. Natural methods are known, but few people actually follow
them; what proportion of the population actually eats healthily, takes
plenty of exercise, drink sufficient water and obtain restful and
regular sleep?

How to Get Rid of Spots

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

There are millions of people around the
world who suffer with acne (Zits); however, medical science continues
to look at new remedies. A great deal of effort is going into research
for a cure; these days, even with serious cases, there are many skin
care treatments available. Most acne skin care products can be broken
down into three main areas:

  • Drugstore: Preventative treatment
  • Internet or Drugstore: Treatment to help relieve the condition
  • Prescription: Dermatologist or Doctor, specialist cream or ointment

General acne products are used as
a preventative measure and include cleansers, make-up removers and
other similar products that can help prevent acne. Whilst many
sufferers use these products there are even more people who just want
to keep their skin clean and conditioned.

Other acne skin care products like skin
cleansers are more specific about their job, they ensure the facial
pores (and other areas) remain free of oil. These types of products are
reducing the chance of oil staying in the pores and aiding the growth
of harmful bacteria which assists the formation of the skin condition.

One particular skin care treatment is an
exfoliation skin peel which cleans the skin and helps control the
spread of the condition. The peels clean the skin by removing all
surface pollution and dead skin cells which can block the pores.

The growth of the skin care market has
allowed even more specialized acne skin care products to be available
without the need to visit the doctor. Skin care products have been
formulated to extract the excess oil that bacteria need to promote the
development of acne. These products have benzoyl peroxide or salicylic
acid as ingredients which the bacterium reacts badly too.

It is preferable when you first start
using this type of product to keep the concentration of it low, around
5.5 percent is best. You can always try a cleaner or cream containing
alpha hydroxy acid if this doesn’t work. It is not always possible to
find an acne skin care product that works first time. You may need to
try a few but if none of them seem to be working then you would be
advised to contact your skin specialist.

Products that your dermatologist or
doctor will recommend will only be available on prescription, they may
include a course of antibiotics or topical ointments. In some case your
doctor may suggest the pustules are drained of harmful contents under
local anesthetic, this is a minor procedure which if carried out by
yourself could result in skin damage.

Hormone treatment might be suggested as
hormone changes can lead to acne. This type of skin care treatment has
been very effective in a large number of cases. The end result is
dealing with this skin complaint is not the problem it once was, there
are now a huge range of products specifically formulated for the task.
This means that a sufferer does not have to put up with this condition
anymore.
